Osseous Matter, explores the mindset of Edward Gein, a man who excavated corpses for trophies and keepsakes. The arrest of Gein took place in Plainfield, Wisconsin, in 1957. Due to his schizophrenia diagnosis, he was not convicted of his crimes due to reason of insanity. He was institutionalized at Mendota Mental Health Institute until lung cancer took his life in 1984.
After reading through Gein’s interrogation transcript, a single phrase appears repeatedly: "All evidence indicates that I did it". Gein neither confirms nor denies his crimes. He states that he was often in a fog, not understanding what he was doing. He realized his mistake as soon as the fog lifted.
I created jewelry out of bones, just like Gein did. The only difference is, I used chicken while Gein used human beings. Using video and archival imagery to reinforce the amount of time and effort it takes to make jewelry out of bones. My process took over three months to complete, having only three pieces of jewelry in the end. The steps to complete this was:
· Tearing the meat off each bone
· Boiling the bones to soften the meat left, completely getting rid of the meat.
· Place bones in dish soap and water solution to start degreasing. Leave in solution for one week.
· Take bones out of dish soap solution, place in bleach water for three hours.
Once done, they are dried and the process of making the jewelry begins.
